Rebecca
Rebecca Wolpert Schwartz is a professional singer/guitarist and award-winning songwriter. She has been performing publicly and privately since 1974. Rebecca has written and produced four albums:"Only Time Can Tell" (secular love songs), "The Light of Shabbat" (a religious experience), "Ahavah Rabah ~ with deep love" (songs of spirit, love, and hope), and "P'tach Libi ~ Open My Heart"
(a landscape for prayer), and has published a songbook, "Rebecca Songs". She has released three singles:"Hashkiveinu" (rock version), "Mi Chamochah" (evening text), and "Miryam Han'viah". Rebecca has also written and recorded songs to help teach autistic children.
Rebecca started her career in the coffeehouses and nightclubs of Philadelphia, performing original and cover tunes. She also led Jewish kids in song at local temples as a youth group songleader and music teacher. Rebecca then began a twenty-plus year career singing at wedding/b'nei mitzvah/anniversary receptions as well as high society parties around the country, and especially enjoyed performing for Barbara Walters, William Shatner, and Vera Wang in NYC, and PA Governor Ed Rendell in Philadelphia.
Rebecca currently works as a cantorial soloist, songleader, choir director, and music teacher in the Philadelphia area. She specializes in worship experiences, engaging people in the power of prayer through music. This includes Shabbat and Havdalah services for adults and/or children, as well as healing services. Rebecca also sings with the elderly at retirement and nursing homes. She is a member of Breath of Dawn, a volunteer group of men and women who seek to bring comfort to people in hospice care through music.
During the summer months, Rebecca enjoys a position as Songleading Director at URJ* Crane Lake Camp in West Stockbridge, MA, where she teaches Jewish music and guitar, sings with campers and staff, leads music for t'filah (prayer), and mentors young adult and teen songleaders. Rebecca has been chosen as Crane Lake's Cornerstone Fellowship Liaison for the summer of 2008, mentoring third year bunk counselors to view themselves as Jewish role models and to become mentors for younger counselors.
Rebecca sings at private b'nei mitzvah and wedding ceremonies, and performs at receptions as a solo singer/guitarist or with a full orchestra. She sings all types of music, from ballads and standards to rock and soul, and Jewish songs, of course!
Rebecca travels for special single events at temples, colleges, etc. and artist-in-residence weekends. Weekends can include Shabbat evening services, Shabbat morning services, Havdalah/evening concert, and then Sunday morning songleading with the kids, a shacharit or healing service with adults, or a song session with the elderly at a local nursing home. Rebecca will work alone or join the cantor/soloist and choirs to create a truly memorable weekend for all. She has performed in the US, Canada, and Israel.
"Rebecca creates a landscape for prayer. She is a performer; not just a singer." Rabbi Howard Bogot
"Rebecca, just a note to say that it was a joy working with you last Shabbat. Your music is a lovely gift that you share in a very spiritual way. Shabbat Shira was enhanced by your presence with us. As I said to Cantor, 'She's allowed back'!" Roland Woehr, Music Director, Congregation Beth Or, Maple Glen, PA
"Rebecca, I can't thank you enough for adding such warmth and joy and melody to our (bar mitzvah) service. You were a big hit!" K. Dubinsky
"Har Sinai Congregation was blessed to have Rebecca Schwartz share in its first Shabbaton weekend in a long time. The warmth and beauty of the music touched everyone who was present. Our congregants have not stopped talking about her music, her voice and her all over talent. They have already come to me with Rebecca’s CD in hand asking that I incorporate some of her music into our service.
It was a thrill for me to be able to sing and work with someone so gifted. We had a great time shaping the music of the services. The “song sessions” after dinner and lunch on Shabbat were filled with ruach. I heard people singing who I had never heard before. Rebecca’s spirit permeated everything we did this weekend. I was so grateful for her presence!" Cantor Nancy R. Ginsberg, M.S.W.
"When she leads us in song, her music brightens our worship and draws us together into a deeply spiritual community." Rabbi Phil Cohen
"Rebecca, the music Friday night was wonderful! Thank you so very much for the role you played in making this (event) happen. I want you to know that I am very grateful to have you with us and for the beautiful music that you share with us."
Rabbi William Kuhn
"I went to your link for the first time, and just spent the last half hour listening to samples of your wonderful singing/songwriting. I am a public school music teacher/weekend religious school music director/cantorial soloist/songleader. I am so excited to hear you. I love your voice and you are a great songwriter. I feel as if I have been given a gift. And, you sing in my vocal range!!!!!
Thank you for your musical gift." L. Deutsch
